Policy innovation that minimizes the role of Criminal justice and explores the government’s regulation of drugs
Our advocacy agenda for our proposed reforms are focused on providing alternatives to policies that call for abstinence-only, zero-tolerance and compulsory approaches, by proposing national and county friendly drug-related legislations. We work with policy makers in Parliament, through our relationships with the Parliamentary Health Committee, the Caucus on the Sustainable Development Goals and the County Assembly Health Committee. We believe that effective drug policies exists between policies that decriminalize drug use and low-level supply and policies that responsibly regulate access to drugs, so that governments can gain better control over current black markets. Arresting, prosecuting and imprisoning people, in the name of drug control, perpetuate major injustices against people who use drugs. Effective drug policies should minimize the role of criminal justice to the greatest extent possible consistent with public health and safety. VOCAL Kenya’s ultimate vision is to achieve total decriminalization of drugs for personal use.
